Cavities. What Are They ?

  • Besides brushing your teeth and flossing probably you will have to face several problems in your adult life that will the dentist's help you can prevent or heal successfully:

  • The gum's disease starts with gingivitis: this disease in an early stage is reversible, the symptoms are swollen and sensitive gums that tend to bleed when you brush or floss your teeth. If you have this symptoms visit your dentist before the problem progresses. In more advanced stages this disease can cause tooth loss.

  • The gum disease can also affect your general health condition. Several studies have demonstrated the posible relationship between gum disease (periodontitis) and cardiopatic diseases or diabetes

  • Aged restaurations: these types of restaurations can cause cavities so deep that can reach the nerves or the tooth. An amalgam has a life period of more than 10 years, a composite restauration has a life period of 3 to 5 years so please if you have aged restaurations is time to change them.

  • An incorrect brushing technique through the years may cause dental sensibility, this happens because the gums near the teeth will migrate to a higher position exposing a part of the tooth called dentine that is known for being very sensible to low temperatures, acid food, etc., for example when you drink a cold beverage or an icecream, lemon juice, etc. If you suffer from sensitive teeth you can purchase special toothpastes at any drugstore.

  • Adults under a lot of stress may scour their teeth at night causing fractures and pain in the muscles of the face, specially the muscles located near the angle of the jaw. If this is your case you need to wear a mouthguard at night to prevent any more fractures and to wake up with relieved muscles in the morning.

  • If you have crowns, bridges or implants remember that these pieces need special care every time you wash your mouth, this will give them a longer life.
